Conservation Strategy Review
The 1997 Forest Plan established a comprehensive, science-based conservation strategy
to address wildlife sustainability and viability. This strategy was based on careful
analysis and integration of the best scientific information available at that time.
The 1997 Forest Plan Record of
Decision committed the Forest Service to conduct an interagency review of the conservation
strategy. This Website was prepared to facilitate the review and provides background
information on how the conservation strategy was developed, and the approach that was
used to accomplish the review.
Workshop - The
Conservation Strategy Review Workshop was conducted April 10 – 14, 2006 at the Ted Ferry
Civic Center in Ketchikan Alaska. This was the primary event used to conduct the review
of the Strategy. For more information on the agenda, topics presented at the workshop, how
information is being processed, how the public can participate, and relevant reference
information, go to the Workshop page.
For a quick summary of key findings from the workshop go
to Key Findings.
For a detailed summary of the workshop go to Workshop Report. The report also includes an
appendix that contains the Considerations Resolution Matrix.
Background - This
section provides a summary of the various efforts or events associated with the historic
development of the conservation strategy and access to key documents and related products
generated by those efforts.
Approach - This section
provides information on how the conservation strategy is being conducted and access to the
work associated with conducting the review.
Newsroom - This section
provides access to any news releases and public announcements associated with the review.
It also provides access to news releases and public announcements for the 1997 Forest Plan
Adjustment Website as the interagency conservation strategy review is associated with
the ongoing forest planning effort being conducted by the Tongass National Forest.
Public Involvement -
This section
takes you to the Public Involvement section of the Forest Plan Adjustment Web site.
Reference Library -
This section provides a library of information pertinent to the conservation strategy review
that was developed prior to and since 1997. The references are organized in relation to key subjects to
facilitate easy access to pertinent information. The Haufler (2007) report provides a review of the
conservation science that was developed since 1997 and its relationship to the Tongass Forest Plan,
including its conservation strategy.
1997 Forest Plan Adjustment
- This takes you to the Website being used to track and facilitate adjustment and update
of the 1997 Tongass Forest Plan. Note that the interagency review of the conservation
strategy is associated with ongoing Forest planning efforts.
